The South West coast of Sri Lanka has great waves from November to March and there is a barrelling surf break round every nook and bay for beginners and experts alike. Particularly recommended nearby are Kabalana Beach and Weligama Bay where you can learn to surf or perfect your talent in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Wildlife tours and National Parks
Take a day trip to either Yala National Park or Udawalawe National Park and witness at first-hand the wonderful wildlife of Sri Lanka. From elephants to leopards, flamingoes to crocodiles, this a truly memorable experience for all the family.
Sri Lanka is famous for its many religions and its ancient temples. Its sacred stupas are a wonder to behold. Join in the Poya Day festival at the local Buddhist temple or visit one of the other beautiful temples in the area.
There are a variety of spas nearby where you can enjoy a relaxing massage or rejuvenating beauty treatment. Alternatively, regain your inner balance by trying a traditional Ayurvedic treatment, tailor made for your mind, body and soul.
Paddle Boarding and Canoeing
Jump straight from your villa onto your own paddle board or canoe to see sunrise or sunset on the beautiful Goviyapana river. You are guaranteed to witness an amazing variety of jungle wildlife at the same time as getting some gentle exercise.
Yoga has a long history and there are many expert teachers in Sri Lanka. Hop onto your mat at a local yoga class to relax your body and soul. For the more adventurous, try practising your yoga moves on a paddle board whilst floating down the river. However, if you would prefer an individual lesson to perfect your poses in the privacy of your villa, this can be easily arranged.
Enjoy the lush countryside away from the busy coast road on an escorted bike ride and take some exercise whilst witnessing sleepy village life and nature slowly going by.
Scuba Diving and Snorkelling
There is excellent scuba diving and snorkelling nearby at Unawatuna, Weligama and Hikkaduwa where you can see a great selection of tropical fish, magnificent coral reefs and shipwrecks.
Tea is a major Sri Lankan export. See traditional Ceylon tea crafting techniques, perfected through centuries, with a fascinating tour of the Handunugoda Tea Estate, a short bicycle or tuk tuk ride away.
Thirteen species of whales migrate each year through the the Southern waters of Sri Lanka, including blue whales, sperm whales, humpback whales and killer whales. A half day trip from nearby Mirissa is a wonderful way to get up, close and personal with these magnificent creatures.
Visit the famous Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for your fix of history and culture before indulging in some serious shopping and quality dining. Full of quirky shops and fabulous restaurants, you can watch the sunset from the ramparts or enjoy a cocktail on a colonial verandah.
